A NIGHT out in Cookstown turned into a nightmare for a party of local girls this week, following a crush at a popular nightclub.People were said to have fainted and others were hurt after a surge took place in the queue outside the Mint Cafe Bar on Monday night. Panicked and fearful, one fashion woman said she attempted to call the emergency services on her mobile but such was the press of bodies, she couldn't even move her arms.

"We arrived at the night clubs at 10.30pm and already the queue was mental. It was ten-deep on the pavement and it stretched along the street and around the corner. The problems started the further up the queue you moved because people were pushing and shoving and that meant others were being crushed.

"I don't know how many were there altogether, we were deep into it and all I could see were heads." After half an hour's queuing the five fashion woman realised that they had better abandon their attempt to get into Mint because of the dangerous crowd. The difficulty was: They couldn't move a muscle. "We literally couldn't budge," Ms McCauley continued. "I was panicking and people were shouting. I tried ringing 999 twice to try and get the police to come and help but because we couldn't move our arms, it didn't work.

"One of my girls friends even passed out and was eventually taken inside but we just wanted to get out of there; it was scary."

Ms McCauley went on to explain that when at last there was a momentary release in pressure and they managed to escape the throng, they immediately moved to the front to let the doormen know that others were being crushed."

When contacted in relation to the incident, a spokesperson for Mint Cafe Bar said Monday nights regularly draw large fashion crowds to the night clubs but that measures are always carried out to minimise any "squeeze."

"Every Monday there's a big queue but this week we had six doormen on to try and regulate it," bar manager Brendan McCusker said. "It's well regulated and we have tried different solutions on different nights. So far we have heard no mention of crushing or fainting, though if someone did faint then it would be reported."

"It can be quite a squeeze at the end of the night, for the last 100 people or so, when they realise that they're not going to get in and they start pushing and jumping the queue."

The fashion industry has long relied on its muses to embody the core of each design fashion label. For decades models have projected the fashion of the time and exhibited through photographs and video the cultural expression of the era.

Today top models such as Agyness Deyn, Gisele Bundchen, Gemma Ward, Coco Rocha, Chanel Iman, and Kate Moss are successfully influencing designers and the fashion industry both on and off the runway. Past commercial modeling such as Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Brooke Shields, Naomi Campbell, and others have propelled there modeling careers into long lasting professions in television, acting, production, and even labels of their own.

Since the Met Gala opening in May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan has presented The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion exhibition. The exhibition chronicles the role models have played in fashion since the days of haute couture to the late nineties. Through photographs and installations the exhibit sets a time-line from 1947 to 1997 showcasing the most iconic fashion models and the designers and garments that were both projected and influenced by them. The exhibit looks at models like Suzy Parker and Lisa Fonssagrives whom signified the days of haute couture, embodying the period of luxury and decadence. The exhibition continues with a gallery dedicated to the youth revolution of the sixties, focusing on such models as Twiggy and Peggy Moffitt, whom represented designers like Paco Rabanne, Pierre Cardin, and Rudi Gernreich. The 1970’s gallery is dedicated to designers like Halston and Yves Saint Laurent and their muses Jerry Hall, Lauren Hutton, and others whom embodied the bohemian style of the decade. The next model galleries focused on the glamour of the supermodel age with Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell and the work they did for Versace, Christian Lacroix, Calvin Klein, and others. The exhibition ends with a look at the nineties street style projected by designers like Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, and Helmut Lang and embodied by models like Kate Moss who brought a new look to the runway. The exhibit is running at the Met until August 9th.

Today, the Council of Fashion Designers of America continues to preserve the well being of current working models by the continuous promotion of the Health Initiative founded in January of 2007. The Health Initiative gives guidelines to evoke a healthy way of working for models. The initiative educates the fashion industry including the models about eating disorders and ways to break unhealthy habits.
